If you are unfamiliar with cupcake stands, they are little tower displays that hold decorated cupcakes. They are usually organized around a central spindle. They usually have between three and five tiers, but they are available in much larger sizes as well. If you want an entirely professional looking cupcake stand, perhaps you would like to buy one at Target or at Bed, Bath & Beyond, or at an online location like Amazon or eBay. However, if you would like to save a bit of money, it's quite possible to make your own cupcake stand.
If you wish to make your own cupcake stand, it is as easy as finding some pieces of wood or other sturdy material and a few little boxes or pillars on which to support them. To make the tower attractive, you will want to use some fabric or some gift wrapping paper to cover both the pieces of wood and the supports. You can have them all match each other, or you can have them contrast with each other, depending on your taste. Another good option is to cover the surface of each level with contact paper such as you might use in a cabinet. In that Case, you can wrap the outside of the wood with a piece of ribbon or lace to decorate it. The wood can be round, which is traditional, or you can use squares or even rectangles according to your taste. You will just want to make sure that your supports are wide enough to fully support the tiers, since your guests might begin taking cupcakes from the front--you don't want the tier to become unbalanced and tip over! If you plan to use a wide support on the bottom level and progressively smaller supports as you go up, you should be fine. Are you planning a small get-together? Just use smaller pieces of wood and fewer levels. Planning a large gala event? Use larger pieces of wood and stack them up higher--as long as your tower is fully supported, the sky's the limit!
